History of Online Shopping:
Online shopping was invented by Michael Aldrich in 1979. He used videotext, which a two-way message service, this revolutionized business. This is called e-commerce. In 1982, Mintel (a videotext online service that can be accessed by telephone lines), could be used to make train reservations, check the stock prices and make online purchases. It is deemed the most successful online service that’s pre WWW.
The concept of online shopping existed in the UK since
the late 1970s, while in the USA online shopping only started in 1989, and it
was an online grocery store called Peapod.com.
In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee; an English computer scientist
created the first WWW server and browser, this opened many doors and
opportunities for businesses. The 1990s was the birth of online shopping
websites, the list includes Netscape, Amazon, and eBay. PayPal was founded in
1998, this allowed users to purchase from these websites without exposing any
personal information.
The internet has changed how people shop today, people
can shop at home, on the move and from any part of the world, unrestricted by
the opening and closing time of shops. Some don’t even shop online, but still
use the online service to check the prices and availability of items before
heading to the high streets.
Advantages of Online Shopping:
· Online shopping allows you to shop at any time, from any vendor,
anywhere from the world. Plus, the user can check and shop from different shops
at the same time.
· With online shopping, the time spent in the car driving to the mall, and
the queue waiting time can now be overlooked, because there is no lines and
traffic in an online shop.
· Also, in many cases the online shops offer lower prices than in real
stores.
Disadvantages of Online Shopping:
· The shipping rates of some online
shops can be a little expensive or have a rule or limit that the user has to reach
to have free shipping; a store may offer free shipping at a minimum of a $50
worth of purchase.
· The delivery time can be irritating if
you’re an impatient person.
· Some online shops don’t offer a return
or repayment policy, and if they did it might take time for the shopper to get repaid.
